Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a compound found in connective, skin, and neural tissues (1). It is the main molecule responsible for maintaining skin moisture because of HA’s ability to bind and hold water molecules and is synthesized within the body. HA has a special role with hydration and lubrication of joints, cartilage, and tissues throughout the body. The skin contains 50% of the HA in the body, especially in the dermis layer of the skin where it maintains the balance of water within and outside the skin cells and osmotic pressure.
